Facebook scams are not new, but with each new scam it gets as tempting as it is possible. Recent one is Free Facebook T-shirt scam. I’m seeing a lot of not-so-gullible users getting trapped this time around.
I must say it’s as tempting as it gets. Look at the above screenshot. It’ a really cool Facebook blue coloured t-shirt.There are multiple versions of the scam going on right now. Some of them claim that Mr. Zuckerberg is giving away free Facebook t-shirts on the occasion of seventh birthday of the biggest social network in the world. Of course Facebook was started in 2004 and the smarties have tried playing an intelligent game this time around.
Why It is a scam?
Clicking on the wall post link takes you to the following page:
This page is strictly designed to mine user information and spread their spam message to your friends. The page requires you to like a country or other and also join their group.
Much like the other scams, the trapped users will be bombarded with automated posts on their walls with links to the scam sites aimed at trapping some more. There are multiple domains being used for this scam, most of which were registered just a couple of days back.
How to Deal with the Scam:
If you “liked” the page and joined the group, then you need to perform some cleanup duty on your profile. Remove the item from your wall by clicking the small “x” in the top right hand corner of the post. It would also be a good idea to remove yourself and report the bogus group you joined.
If you submitted your email address, home address and / or other information, then be prepared to receive a deluge of spam email and marketing offers. Keep a watchful eye on your credit and make sure no identity theft attempts are made.
If you or your Facebook friends are falling for tricks like this, it’s time to get yourself informed of the latest threats
Google Plus(g+) is a social networking site from Google. Currently it’s an s invitation only service. I have been using it for quiet some time and I must say most of the features are like Facebook. What makes it’s different and more likeable than Facebook is that it’s very easy to use and g+ has taken privacy very seriously so it gives complete control to the users over their content.
Having said that g+ was(tats “it was”) not as engaging as Facebook because there were no games or apps which makes Facebook user spend a lot of time on it. But not any more after unveiling g+ was only a matter of time for Google before launching games in g+. But the have taken a different approach in that. The official announcement starts like this
My family has a games closet. Inside you’ll find a few decks of cards, two decades’ worth of board games and a Twister mat for those times when we’re feeling limber. Playing games is a great way for us to spend quality time with each other (and a little healthy competition never hurt anyone either).
What google is saying is that unlike Facebook where your game activities are published in your news feed, in g+ there is a separate tab for games, If you choose not to play any games then you can easily ignore it completely concentrate on the real people.
The initial set of games include Angry Bird, Edge World etc.
If anyone need g+ invite just leave a comment.
The Google-owned social network Orkut is not well-known in the U.S., but it’s extremely popular in India and Brazil – that is, until Facebook started catching up. But Orkut just announced a slew feature that makes it look pretty good.
“You’re not always the same person. Why should it be any different on the Web?” That’s the title of the Orkut blog post announcing the changes that place emphasis on grouping your friends.
The question is right on target. If you’re one of the people who joined Orkut in college, you probably connected with every new person you met at a party, added “pounding beers” as an interest, blasted updates about skipping class and tagged yourself in every drunken photo. But then your little sister joined Facebook. And then your mom did. And then you did a summer internship, and your boss was on Facebook. And suddenly you were censoring yourself for three or four different audiences.
Sometimes we want to use social media to talk about how much we’re growing and learning at the new job, and sometimes we want to complain about work and talk about how wasty-face we’re going to get tonight. Google seems to get this separation of online personalities now, an interesting twist after the fallout when Google Buzz tried to make all your friends be friends with each other.
You can now choose the privacy level for each “scrap” or bit of content you post to Orkut, choosing between individual friends, a group, multiple groups, all your friends or the public Orkut timeline.Orkut has also started pushing games more, linking games and applications from user homepages. Orkut said “more than six million people have created cafes in CafeMania and 36 million people manage their Farms,” in a period of just two months. Orkut will also soon be releasing a new platform for its communities feature, which is similar to Facebook Groups.
Other new features in Orkut are
Scraps to multiple people
Now you can send scraps to your friends straight from your homepage in orkut. And more: you can send the same scrap to many people at the same time or even to all your friends. That’s right: no more copy and paste!
Privacy in groups
You can choose the privacy level you want for your messages. For instance, you can send a private scrap to a group of four people and only those four people can see it and reply to it. If they reply, you guys will have a private, group conversation visible only to you and those four friends. If you prefer going public, just send a scrap visible to all your friends or even send a public scrap so everyone in orkut can see it. It’s your choice.
Groups of friends
To make it easier for you to interact with your groups of friends, now you can open them from your homepage. Your groups will always be a click away from you, on the top of the page. When you click a group (for example, “college friends”), you’ll see updates, photos, videos and activities only from people who are part of that group. If you want to write them something, the scrap editor will automatically select everyone in the group and the privacy will be set to “Private” so you can share information that is relevant to that group only. And, of course, you can change that privacy setting before sending the message.
We know that sometimes we invite someone from work to a family party or we bring a gym friend to the office happy hour. That means: sometimes our groups of friends mix together. Thinking of this, you can easily add or remove as many people as you want from the recipients of a scrap.
The groups are yours only. Nobody else will know the names of your groups of friends. When you send something to the entire group, people will know who else can see the message, but they will not know the name you chose for the group within your orkut. Also, you can change and edit your groups whenever you want, the way you want it!
Groups formed automagically!
You can create your groups of friends manually. However Google has came up with the “automagic groups”: Based on your interactions, orkut automatically suggests some groups of friends for you, and these suggested groups will be ready for you to use. Also, you can add your personal touch to your groups at anytime and make them any way you want. Because new friendships usually come along with time, orkut will also suggest new members for your groups over the time, so they are always up-to-date with minimum work from you.
More news and what’s to come
Birthdays: Google is also improving the way birthdays appear in your page, and you can send your friends birthday wishes without leaving your homepage. You’ll also be able to interact with other people who are also sending them happy birthdays and celebrate your friend’s birthday with them.
Friend Suggestions: Friend suggestions is always being improved, and these suggestions will be part of your updates, moving down in your page along the day, just like any other update. When we’ve a brand new, really good suggestion, we will bring it to the top again.
Fortune of The Day and Recent Visitors will also appear every day as activities, scrolling down as new updates from your friends come in.
Games and Applications: millions of people are playing with and using applications in orkut every day. In the period of two months, more than 6 million people created cafes in CafeMania and 36 million people manage their Farms, all on orkut’s game applications. To make accessing games and applications easier, now you can find them in your homepage, right below your communities. Not to mention, applications also have new pages now.
Communities: Orkut communities are a great way for people to expand their social circles and know other people who share the same interests, support the same team or want to know more about a place or event. Google is testing a new communities page which will be rolled out soon.
