Why Mahatma Gandhi Did Not get Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize  is one of the five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the 603px-1933_Nobel_Peace_Prize_awarded_to_Norman_AngellSwedish industrialist and inventor  Alfred Nobel. According to Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who

“…shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”

The one man who demonstrated without using any weapons and violent methods one country can win over an empire was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is a champion of peace, he single handedly started the downfall of the mighty British Empire. Yet it’s still puzzling that he didn’t receive a Nobel peace prize.

Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize, although he was nominated five times between 1937 and 1948, including the first-ever nomination by the American Friends Service Committee, though he made the short list only twice, in 1937 and 1947.Decades later, the Nobel Committee publicly declared its regret for the omission, and admitted to deeply divided nationalistic opinion denying the award. Gandhi was nominated in 1948 but was assassinated before nominations closed. That year, the committee chose not to award the peace prize stating that "there was no suitable living candidate" and later research shows that the possibility of awarding the prize posthumously to Gandhi was discussed and that the reference to no suitable living candidate was to Gandhi. When the 14th Dalai Lama was awarded the Prize in 1989, the chairman of the committee said that this was "in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi."

It seems like he was denied Nobel prize because of the people for whom he fought for???

Does Obama Deserve Noble Prize

I was shocked like every one when I heard the US president Barrack Obama was given the Nobel peace prize for 2009.The reason given was probably the funniest thing that I have ever heard the reason as given in Nobel prize web site the reason is

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world’s leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama’s appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Alfred Nobel outlined in his will the grounds on which the Peace Prize was to be given, saying it should go annually to the person who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding of peace congresses.

But Obama has never done anything to improve the world peace. He is making some efforts to reduce the tension created between US and the Arab world, tries to shut down Guantanamo bay and end the war in Iraq. But is mere effort is qualification of such a coveted prize. The list of people who have got Nobel Peace prize Mother Teresa,Martin Luther King Jr,The Dalai Lama,Al Gore,Mohammad Yunus all of them made a change in the society by their work. They gave their entire life for the cause they believed in.Mahatma Gandhi was not even given Nobel prize, but he is a champion of peace. But as for as Obama is concerned Nobel committee says that It hopes that he will do better work due to this prize. It is as if you give gold medal to an athlete before the race hoping that he will win.My final word is that even though I don’t have any personal grudge on him but he doesn’t deserve the Nobel peace prize because he has not done anything to promote world peace.
