Story of Founder of Orkut
Posted by aronnirmal
Many of us in use Orkut but ever wondered who is it’s creator is what is and what is history behind him.Almost everyone uses orkut but it’s founder is not as famous as Mark Zukerberg. So I did a bit of Googling and found some details which I found interesting.
He is a guy lost his girlfriend in a train accident….
but the girll’s name nowhere appeared in the dead list.
This guy grew up and became IT technical architect in his late 20’s achievement in itself!!.
He hired developers from the whole globe and plan to make a
software where he could search for his girl friend through the web..
Things went as planned…and he found her, after losing millions of dollars and 3 long years!!
It was time to shut down the search operation, when the CEO of Google had a word with this guy and took over this application,
This Software made a whopping 1 billion dollars profit in its first year, which we today know as ORKUT .
His name is ORKUT BUYUKKOTEN . Yes its named after him only. .
ORKUT BUYUKKOTEN today has 13 assistants to monitor his scrapbook & 8 to
monitor his friends-list. He gets around 20,000 friend-requests a day & about 85,000 scraps!!!
Some other Cool Facts about this guy:
* He gets $12 from Google when every person registers to this website.
* He also gets $10 when you add somebody as a friend.
* He gets $8 when your friend’s friend adds you as a friend & gets $6 if
anybody adds you as friend in the resulting chain.
* He gets $5 when you scrap somebody & $4 when somebody scraps you.
* He also gets $200 for each photograph you upload on Orkut.
* He gets $2.5 when you add your friend in the crush-list or in the hot-list.
* He gets $2 when you become somebody’s fan.
* He gets $1.5 when somebody else becomes your fan.
* He even gets $1 every time you logout of Orkut.
* He gets $0.5 every time you just change your profile-photograph.
* He also gets $0.5 every time you read your friend’s scrap-book & $0.5 every time
Well, the story seems to be ok … though the money he’s making out of it seems to be quite exorbitant and impractical ..
I just Google it to dig more into it and can’t help to share my findings here
I found his Homepage. No doubt, it’s quite impressive.but, it seems to be created in his student life and not updated for long time since – At least, there’s no info about his brain-child "ORKUT".I searched Wikipedia Orkut Büyükkökten is a Turkish software engineer who developed the social networking service called Orkut. He developed Orkut as an independent project while working at Google.
(Google follows a policy that encourages its employees to use 20% of their office time to pursue personal interests using official resources .)
While previously working for Affinity Engines, he had developed a similar system, InCircle, intended for use by university alumni groups. In late June 2004, Affinity Engines filed suit against Google, claiming that Buyukkokten and Google based Orkut on InCircle code. The allegation is based on the presence of 9 identical bugs in Orkut that also existed in InCircle. Google and Orkut have since settled the lawsuit; the terms have not been disclosed.
Originally from the Turkish Konya, Buyukkokten obtained a B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering and Information Science from Bilkent University in Ankara, and earned a Ph.D.in Computer Science from Stanford University. His research at Stanford focused on Web search and efficient PDA.
Orkut Buyukkokten is a software engineer and product manager at Google. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford in 2002. He has been building and working on online communities the past six years. His interests include social networks, interface design and mobile applications.
